Beehive Ball IV The Afterglow Prints

The most unique silent auction items of Beehive Ball IV were four framed reproductions of covers of The Afterglow found by John and Nancy Marshall in a Detroit library archive. The Afterglow was published March 1925 through December 1927. It was a monthly society magazine that reported primarily about life in the Birmingham Bloomfield area. It addition to a wide variety of advertisements, the magazine was filled with articles about country homes and estates, society marriages, visits, trips, the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club and the Aviation Riding and Hunt Club on Green Lake. There was news about various golf and country clubs, photographs of people and places in the area, garden tips and strategies and book and theater reviews.

Each issue sold for .25 and featured a colorful cover designed by a local artist. Elinor N. Millington, the wife of Theodore H. Millington, president and treasurer of The Afterglow Publishing Company, Inc. is credited with designing at least six of the covers.

Beehive Ball IV Update

     We are nine weeks and a few days away from the 4th Friends of Preservation Bloomfield Beehive Ball. Mark May 13th on your calendars and start looking forward to an evening of Friends, Fun and Fund Raising
     The Auction Committee has already begun logging in exciting Live and Silent Auction goodies. Also, our two raffle items: a "Wine Collection" and a "Restaurant Night Out" are taking shape. We are waiting for your donation of a special wine bottle and/or a gift certificate to your favorite local eatery to make these raffles truly successful. We look forward to receiving your creative Silent Auction items that you donate so generously each year. Although we plan to have fewer items, these are still a big part of the event’s profit making.
     There are only four Friends meetings until May and we urge all of you to please get your donation-commitments in to us soon. It would be helpful if you used our donation form. These will also be available at the upcoming Friends meetings. The deadline for getting items in to us is April 30. The committee is available to pick-up an item if you need help.
     Please consider bringing any of your Auction items- wine bottles and restaurant gift certificates-- to the next Friend’s meeting scheduled for this Saturday, March 12th.
     Fellow Bees: there are many ways you can help make this year’s Beehive Ball a success. Your participation is so very important!    We need you to "Bee" involved!

Page: A2The Friends of Preservation Bloomfield held a Gingerbread Brunch last week and drew a full house of 250 people. For some, the main object was to raise money to restore a log cabin and a farmhouse that have been in the area for 160 years, which is even longer than Bill Bonds.

For others, it was to stare slack-jawed at the wonders chefs and bakers can create with gingerbread, spice drops, peppermints, frosting, slivered almonds and some architectural blueprints, plus expertise and about 12 hours.

As someone who leans strongly toward saving history instead of bulldozing it, I wondered how the Friends of Preservation made their case in an era of troubled economies and cranky citizens.

As the most uniquely unqualified of the three gingerbread judges, I bake even more poorly and rarely than I cook. I also wondered how the heck the sous chef from the host Oakland Hills Country Club built a 5-foot-tall Eiffel Tower. The tower only earned an honorable mention, a solid indicator of how spectacular the other entries were. It was an eminently fulfilling morning, even if the gingerbread houses aren't edible and I couldn't stay for the crepes.

Sweet, sweet details

One of the other judges was Michael Koch, a vice president at the Morley Candy Co. "It's amazing what they can do with frostings," he said at one point as he poked at a peppermint-striped pillar.

The third [judge] was Daniel MacLeish of MacLeish Building in Troy. "From a technical standpoint," he said of the Santa's Workshop by Melanie Weidmayer of Manchester Bakery, "she got it right." He was particularly taken by the supports in the corners and the tools hung on the walls. For posterity's sake, there may be gingerbread historians taking note. Weidmayer won second place, behind a sprawling mansion by Patricia Duda of Pine Lake Country Club that used ribbon candy as smoke rising from the chimney.

In the gingerbread game, much as in historic preservation, it's about the details. If you are replacing logs on the Craig Log Cabin, for instance, you need to chop down the trees in the winter, when the sap has fled the wood. Not only are the logs less likely to warp that way, they're lighter to carry. Smart folks, those settlers - - which is one of the things the preservationists like to be able to point out.

Learning from the past

The Gingerbread Brunch raised $20,000 or so toward the renovation of the cabin and the Federalist-style Barton Farmhouse. Both have been relocated to the Bowers School Farm, a land laboratory for Bloomfield Hills Schools that's said to be one of only three working school farms in the United States.

The Friends of Preservation Bloomfield use only private money, providing a level of immunity from any grousing about who needs some old dumb farmhouse anyway. Other worthy projects in less tony areas might not be able to say the same, but there's a value to being able to compare then and now. "We need to understand how ingenuity has helped us grow," said school board member Cynthia von Oeyen, and how we've grown, period. Those ceilings seem low for a reason.

Christine Zambrecki, the former Henry Ford Health System COO who chaired the event, said she has given long thought to the term "landscape" and decided she's a bigger fan of the second syllable than the first.

Scape is a sense of place, she said, of culture and history and belonging. "It's preserving the human-ness of a place," she contended.

That's not always easy, either with wood or with gingerbread and shredded coconut, but it's worth it.

Bees are Buzzin' for a Beehive Ball

Friday the 13th could be your lucky day…that’s if you come to Beehive Ball IV on Friday, May 13 at The Village. Similar to last year, the evening will include a silent and live auction, a seated dinner, entertainment by Rennie Kaufmann and a few surprises. We’re counting on you to come to the Ball and bring friends. You won’t be sorry!

The Auction Committee needs traditional silent auction items such as theme baskets, gift certificates, theatre and movie tickets, restaurant certificates, wine etc. We will take anything you have to offer—cooking classes, golf outings, bridge lessons . . . no good deed, idea or item will be turned down.

Naturally, we also need items for the Live Auction—once-in-a- lifetime opportunities, a stay at a vacation home, popular sports tickets, and golf outings are always popular. A Mystery Trip to Hamtramck or some other destination might be fun. Auctioneer Ed Cherney intends to keeps it lively and fast, because, if the past is any predictor, our items will be few but good.

If YOU help, we’ll all benefit- but the happiest recipient will the charming little Barton Farmhouse located at the Bowers School Farm since all proceeds will go toward its restoration.

Greeting, Friends:

Last Saturday at the Bowers Academy, we officially kicked-off the planning season for our fourth Beehive Ball.  If you were there, you know what a lovely morning it was. If you missed it...We Missed You!

The upcoming Ball is scheduled for Friday, May13th at The Village Club.  It will be similar to last year with a silent and live auction, a seated dinner, entertainment and a few surprises.

We will be counting on our Friends to come to the Ball, bring their favorite guests, donate awesome auction items, and join in the spirited bidding process. The Auction Committee would greatly appreciate at least one auction donation from all the Bees. We will thankfully accept your traditional Silent items –theme baskets, gift certificates, tickets, bottles of wine, etc. – but are hoping you might consider donating one-of-a-kind “experiential” items for a unique Auction experience.

For example: our Friend Pat Hardy is offering to take a group to Hamtramck for an afternoon of shopping, eating, and historical exploration! Do you or your friends have a special talent or have access to a unique experience that would generate some bidding excitement? Cooking classes, golf at a local club, hard to get tickets to sporting events or concerts, garden tours of your yard, bridge lessons, knitting or foreign language skills… Use your creativity and let us know what you have in mind.

This year we plan to offer a “Restaurant Night Out” raffle item, and would love your donations of new or unused restaurant gift certificates.

Our Live Auction is also in need of higher end items at $150.00 + — vacation stays, popular game tickets…UM/MSU/Notre Dame… once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

We have a Wish List of Ideas and will be happy to share it at our next Friends meeting scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 26th, 9 a.m. at Paul Nine’s office.

We are always ready to assist you with an idea, make a call, fluff a basket, or pick up an item. Helpful letters of introduction, tax credit forms, etc. are available for your acquisition and solicitation efforts out in the community. You will find them in the menu column to the right.  Remember, cash donations are gladly accepted!

It will take all of us working together to make this year’s BHB a success. Be it helping on a committee, donating items, sending a check or coming and raising your bidding paddle…we need all the Bees to get Busy!

Preservation Bloomfield is a Michigan non-profit corporation formed by the Charter Township of Bloomfield, the City of Bloomfield Hills, the Bloomfield Hills School District and the Bloomfield Historical Society to preserve heritage and build community. The restoration of the Barton Farmhouse and the Craig Log Cabin at the Bowers Farm are two projects adopted by the organization that when restored will contribute to the education of children and serve as community resources. These projects are funded by contributions from the private sector.

Friends of Preservation Bloomfield is an auxiliary group charged with raising funds to complete the Barton House Project. The Beehive Ball is an annual event hosted by the Friends to bring the community together for an evening of fun while asking them to invest in the project through ticket sales, sponsorships and the donation of items for a spectacular auction.
